M is for Music

So far, ‘M’ has been the easiest letter for me.  You may be thinking, Well, Aimee, you haven’t posted in a couple of days.  It seems like ‘M’ stumped you.  Wrong!  I’ve just been busy keeping up with the day-to-day stuff, and blogging comes after everything else, sadly.

So, music.  It’s always been a pretty huge part of my life.  I took piano lessons in late middle school and junior high.  I was in choir and band.  It’s what inspired my tattoo.

Naturally, my taste in music has changed over the years.  I don’t like boy bands as much as I used to, though sometimes they’re fun to add to a playlist.  I wouldn’t say that my music taste has gotten more adult, it’s just gotten better.  I’ve learned to appreciate really good lyrics and guitar riffs.

A few years ago, a guy friend introduced me to some of the best artists and taught me how to appreciate them (and baseball).  He taught me to love John Mayer, Jason Mraz, James Morrison, and Sara Bareilles.  And he even invited me to go see John Mayer in concert with him, which, I might add, was the best concert I’ve ever been to.

My friend taught me to discover artists on my own, and not let the Top 40 dictate who I should listen to.

I’ve since added artists such as Mat Kearney and Matt Nathanson to my music collection, and I’m always looking for more.

You may be wondering what makes these particular artists so great and not some others.  Well, they may not be great to you, but I can connect to some of them pretty personally.  It almost seems as if the lyrics to some of the songs have become a part of me, and I have lived them.

None of the boy bands’ songs could pull on my heart strings and make me evaluate my life.  That’s what good music does, folks.

Here’s the song I was listening to when I finally realized, for myself, that songs really could take on a deeper meaning.
